Fixed Castors
Fixed Castors are sometimes referred to as rigid castors. This is because Fixed castors are indeed Rigid and can only perform straight line movements. The bracket is formed from a single sheet of steel or stainless steel pressed into the desired shape. Alternatively, fabricated castors are made from forged steel, the yokes (or side plates...) are welded to the top plate. In both cases, fixed castors do not have any moving parts. The wheel sits directly under the top plate so that the castor offset is zero. Conversely, swivel castors have the centre of the wheel offset from the centre of the top plate (where the swivel axis is). The longer the offset the more easily the castor can self-align to the direction of force. That is, direction you want to castor to go. See here for swivel castors.
Fixed castors are generally used either in perfectly straight aisles where you want your trolley to only move forwards and backwards. It is more common that Rigid Castors are used in in conjunction with swivel or lockable swivel castors. They provide stability to your trolleys movement when travelling in a straight line and steering when rounding curves or corners.
Using Fixed Castors
A combination of Fixed and Swivelling castors is the most common configuration (two fixed and two swivel). With this configuration turning on the spot is quite hard. If you need to do this maybe all swivel castors is what you need. The addition of a directional locks can turn some castors into fixed castors and back again. Call us on 0121 772 1010 to learn more.
A word of caution. If you are using a six castor configuration, the two central castors should be Rigid Castors and at least one size bigger than those at the front and at the back. Furthermore, the two central castors must be able to hold at least half the total weight so they are strong enough to enable the platform to pivot on them. 100mm Fixed Castor, 250kg Capacity | Nylon Wheel, Roller Bearing (429NYB)
100mm Top Plate Fixed Castor (Pressed Steel) with ... Read More80x60mm Fixing Bolt Hole Centres and 128mm overall height. The castor wheel is made from Nylon and has a needle Roller Bearing. Load Capacity = 250kg Nylon is a high quality, low maintenance, impact resistant wheel that has a high load capacity. The nylon material is extremely resistant to salts, greases, acids and alkalis and will not mark or damage concrete floors. This makes Nylon probably the most popular castor wheel material. The roller bearing in the hub (central part of the wheel) consists of steel rollers within an impact resistant plastic cage. These rollers rotate between the axle tube and the wheel hub which reduces the rolling resistance making it easy to move even under heavy loads. Roller bearings are rugged, robust and largely maintenance-free. -

For the compression performance, please see the image for the curve by clicking on the thumbnail image above. To use this curve, please calculate the weight being carried by this castor and divide that by the one less than the number of castors on your equipment, So if you have a trolley using 4 of these castors and the total weight being carried is 500kg, then the compression of the rubber pad is the reading given on the y axis at 167kg (500kg / 3 = 167kg) which is between 11 and 12mm.

100mm Black Fixed Castor, 200kg Capacity | Rubber Tyre Wheel, Ball Bearing (MFV100BRN2B)
100mm All Black Fixed Castor with Black Elastic Ru... Read Morebber Tyre on a nylon centre wheel with a single ball bearing. This castor is designed for theatre applications to reduce reflection from lighting. It can also be used in any application where a pressed steel castor is required. The Swivel Brake Bracket has a 4 hole top plate with 80x60mm bolt hole spacing. The load capacity of this castor is 200kg using manual propulsion at 4km/h (walking speed) The Black Elastic Rubber Tyre offers a higher load capacity than standard grey or black rubber tyres and is quiet and gentle on floors. The soft tread rubber (65 Shore A) absorbs vibrations whilst in motion making this a low noise option. The ball bearing lowers the rolling resistance to reduce the effort required to move the castors. Together with the strong bracket that has a double ball race in the swivel head makes this castors a great performer and one of our most popular products. DOWNLOAD CATALOGUE PAGE HERE -
