Fixed Castors
Fixed Castors are sometimes referred to as rigid castors. This is because Fixed castors are indeed Rigid and can only perform straight line movements. The bracket is formed from a single sheet of steel or stainless steel pressed into the desired shape. Alternatively, fabricated castors are made from forged steel, the yokes (or side plates...) are welded to the top plate. In both cases, fixed castors do not have any moving parts. The wheel sits directly under the top plate so that the castor offset is zero. Conversely, swivel castors have the centre of the wheel offset from the centre of the top plate (where the swivel axis is). The longer the offset the more easily the castor can self-align to the direction of force. That is, direction you want to castor to go. See here for swivel castors.
Fixed castors are generally used either in perfectly straight aisles where you want your trolley to only move forwards and backwards. It is more common that Rigid Castors are used in in conjunction with swivel or lockable swivel castors. They provide stability to your trolleys movement when travelling in a straight line and steering when rounding curves or corners.
Using Fixed Castors
A combination of Fixed and Swivelling castors is the most common configuration (two fixed and two swivel). With this configuration turning on the spot is quite hard. If you need to do this maybe all swivel castors is what you need. The addition of a directional locks can turn some castors into fixed castors and back again. Call us on 0121 772 1010 to learn more.
A word of caution. If you are using a six castor configuration, the two central castors should be Rigid Castors and at least one size bigger than those at the front and at the back. Furthermore, the two central castors must be able to hold at least half the total weight so they are strong enough to enable the platform to pivot on them.
