Braked castors, also known as lockable castors, are designed to provide controlled movement and secure positioning for industrial, commercial and material handling equipment.

Most braked castors are swivel castors fitted with wheel brakes, directional locks or total stop braking systems for improved safety and st...ability. Braked castors can include different locking mechanisms depending on the application requirements:

  • Wheel Brake – Locks the wheel to prevent rolling

  • Directional Lock – Locks the swivel movement for straight-line travel

  • Total Stop Brake – Locks both wheel rotation and swivel movement simultaneously


Most brake systems are fitted to swivel castors. Fixed castors with brakes are less common, although some specialist heavy-duty and shock-absorbing castors include braking systems.

Braked Castor Construction


Swivel braked castors rotate 360 degrees around a vertical swivel axis and consist of a castor wheel mounted within a swivel housing or bracket. The main components typically include:

  • Top plate or bolt hole fitting

  • Swivel head and ball race

  • Castor bracket or yoke

  • Wheel and axle assembly

  • Brake mechanism


The top plate or fixing determines how the castor attaches to equipment. Common fixing methods include top plate fixings and single bolt hole fittings. Correct bolt hole centres are important when replacing existing castors.

Single & Double Ball Race Bearings


The swivel head contains ball bearings which allow the castor to rotate smoothly under load. Braked swivel castors are commonly available with:

  • Single ball race bearings

  • Double ball race bearings


Double ball race designs are widely used for medium-duty and heavy-duty applications because they provide improved load distribution, smoother steering and greater durability under static and dynamic loads.

Braked Castors for Industrial & Commercial Applications

Braked castors are available primarily on swivel castors and they can be either a wheel brake or a total stop brake.

Multiple top plate sizes and fixing hole centres are available to suit different trolley and machinery mounting requirements.

Castor Sizes & Overall Height

Castor size is normally based on wheel diameter rather than overall height.

Common wheel diameters include:

  • 40mm
  • 50mm
  • 75mm
  • 80mm
  • 100mm
  • 125mm
  • 150mm
  • 160mm
  • 200mm
  • 250mm
  • 300mm

The overall castor height will always be greater than the wheel diameter because the swivel head and bracket sit above the wheel. For example, a 100mm castor is typically around 128mm overall height.

Braked castors are available with:

  • Nylon wheels
  • Polypropylene wheels
  • Rubber tyre wheels
  • Elastic rubber wheels
  • Polyurethane wheels
  • Cast iron wheels

Different wheel materials offer varying levels of floor protection, rolling resistance, noise reduction and load capacity depending on the application.
