Swivel Castors and wheels can swivel 360 degrees about the vertical axis (see figure below). They consist of a housing and a caster wheel. The housing itself is made up of a plate fitting, swivel bearings and a yoke. The Yoke is often referred to as the castor's frame (see figure below).
The plate fitting determines how the... castor is going to be attached to the equipment. It is usually either a single bolt hole fitting or a plate fixing which is generally square, rectangular or triangular. Plate fittings are usually bolted to equipment so knowing your required bolt hole centres is important. The Swivel Head consists of a ball race and a number of ball bearings that roll within it. Swivel Castors can either have a single ball race or a double ball race. They perform the same function. The double ball race was developed for medium and heavy applications. This is because they are compact, perform well under static and dynamic loads and provide excellent steerability.
Swivel castors can be fitting with locks which lock (brake) wither the wheel or the swivel head or both. See Brake Castors.
Swivel Castor Components
Swivel Castor Offset
The Swivel Castor's offset it the distance from the swivel axis to the centre of the wheel (where it is secured to the castor frame). It is the reason a swivel castor will go in the direction you want it to go regardless its starting direction. The offset and castor wheel's diameter make up the swivel radius where the swivel radius = Offset + (Wheel Diameter / 2).
This is the radius of circle described but the outer dimension of the wheel swivelling around the vertical axis. Basically, this is important because it tells you how much room is needed for the swivel caster to swivel. Furthermore, the general rule is the bigger the offset the better the castor's running performance but the lower the weight it can carry.Read More
100mm Top Plate Swivel Castor (Flexello Brand - Pr... Read Moreessed Steel) with 80x60mm Fixing Bolt Hole Centres and 128mm overall height. White Nylon Wheel with Roller Bearing. Load Capacity = 250kgNylon is a high quality, low maintenance, impact resistant wheel that has a high load capacity. The nylon material is extremely resistant to salts, greases, acids and alkalis and will not mark or damage concrete floors. This makes Nylon probably the most popular castor wheel material. The roller bearing in the hub (central part of the wheel) consists of steel rollers within an impact resistant plastic cage. These rollers rotate between the axle tube and the wheel hub which reduces the rolling resistance making it easy to move even under heavy loads. Roller bearings are rugged, robust and largely maintenance-free.

The slotted bolt holes cover the European and UK standard 140x105mm bolt holes. The load capacity of this castor is 2500kg at 4km/hThis high performance castor is fitted with a white machine cast nylon wheel that will not mark the floor. An extra strong welded castor frame that is powder coated and fitted with a high performance castor wheel containing two ball bearings that turns on a specially designed integrated axle shaft arrangement makes this castor one of the most durable in the market. Perfect for moving very heavy loads where strength, durability and performance are criticalThe swivel head of the 125mm - 250mm sizes of the GXT range come with a thrust bearing and a taper roller bearing in the swivel head.

100mm All Black Swivel Castor with Black Elastic R... Read Moreubber Tyre on a nylon centre wheel with a single ball bearing. This castor is designed for theatre applications to reduce reflection from lighting. It can also be used in any application where a pressed steel castor is required. The Swivel Brake Bracket has a 4 hole top plate with 80/77x60mm bolt hole spacing. The load capacity of this castor is 200kg using manual propulsion at 4km/h (walking speed)The Black Elastic Rubber Tyre offers a higher load capacity than standard grey or black rubber tyres and is quiet and gentle on floors. The soft tread rubber (65 Shore A) absorbs vibrations whilst in motion making this a low noise option. The ball bearing lowers the rolling resistance to reduce the effort required to move the castors. Together with the strong bracket that has a double ball race in the swivel head makes this castors a great performer and one of our most popular products.DOWNLOAD CATALOGUE PAGE HERE

There is a hardened Taper Roller Bearing in he swivel head, which has a grease nipple, for smooth swivelling action and durability. The Top Plate is 112mm x 112mm and has 4 bolt holes that are spaced 92mm x 92mm, each with a 9mm hole diameter. The castor is able to tilt +/- 5o from its central axis according to the flatness of the floor. This ensures that this castor's wheels keep contact with the floor allowing smooth AGV movement and protection of the loaded cargo when changing directions (See illustration below)The wheels are more widely separated from each other than most Twin Wheel Castors. When changing direction, the two wheels spin in opposite directions to each other which reduces the castor offset. The smaller the offset the less chance that the AGV will deviate from its designated line. This castor frame has two wheels with a Polyurethane tyre (Shore A 95) on an Aluminium centre each containing ball bearings, The polyurethane wheel has excellent elasticity the minimises slipping that can happen when an AGV starts or stops. In addition, the elasticity also absorbs small shocks arising from small imperfections in the floor. The wheel itself is non marking and will not damage the floor.

The Die Cast Aluminium Foot Pad is operated by a Hex Adjuster with M20 Leveler (Spanner not included)The Foot Master levelling castor is a multi-functional swivel castor that provides mobility and levelling functions. This allows users to move and position large equipment into place with added stability using the levelling feature.Because of the lifting and lowering function of the Foot Master castor, like all Jacking Castors, it is important understand that each castor may be subjected to HALF THE TOTAL WEIGHT. Therefore, the recommended load capacity for each Foot Master Levelling Castor is half the castor's Static Load Capacity, that is, when the castors' levelling function is not being used. The load capacity of the Footmaster Castor when it is being moved and levelled is given by the Dynamic Load Capacity.

The ranges include pressed steel, Stainless Steel and Fabricated or welded castor housings.
A castor’s size is usually referred to by the wheel’s diameter. The most common sizes are 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 80mm, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 160mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm. These are the wheel sizes and because the swivel head sits above the caster wheel, the castor’s overall height will be somewhat larger than the wheel. We’ve had some customers purchase a 100mm Castor expecting it to be 100mm tall, it’s not, it’s usually around 128mm tall.
Each Swivel Castor can have a wide range of castor wheels. Nylon, Polypropylene, Rubber Tyre, Elastic Rubber Tyre, Polyurethane Tyres and Cast Iron Wheels are the most common.
